Complete Skier - Après-ski in St Anton
Après-ski in St Anton
>> Posted by Complete Skier, 13 January 2010
St Anton, as well as being famous for its wide ranging ski area is well known for its lively après-ski soon. Having now been out here for over six weeks, I finally feel qualified to give an overview, albeit brief of the numerous après ski options that give St Anton this reputation.
The resort has a huge variety of slope sidebars and restaurants. The two most famous, situated within a hundred yards of each other, are the Krazy Kangaruh (KK's) and Moooserwits bar. These can both be reached by skiing blue run number 1, the main run that goes back into town (although getting to KK's requires a bit of an extra walk). Alternatively a red run goes right to KK's door.
Krazy Kangurah is famous as perhaps the liveliest après ski-bar in the alps. It opens at 3 in the afternoon and starts getting really busy from about 4 onwards. The bar itself is split onto two levels. The main bar is situated upstairs with the basement hosting a small night club where table dancing in your ski boots is very much the norm. KK's tends to attract a very young and mainly English speaking holiday and seasonairre crowd. Mooserwits, in contrast, although still extremely bust tends to be frequented mainly by Austrians and Germans as well as attracting a slightly older crowd.
The town itself supposedly has over 20 different bars and pubs. Fanghbar and Anton bar are two bars definitely worth visiting. They are situated at the bottom of the two main lifts, being at the bottom of the Galzig and Nasserein lifts respectively, and are a great places to go after a hard days skiing.
Venturing further into town, the Australian run Bar Cuba is a popular destination for holiday makers and seasonairres alike. It has a fantastic happy hour which runs from 4-7.30 Monday to Friday (with live music everyday) when drinks are as little as 2 euros a pint. Later on in the night it is always rammed from about 11 o'clock onwards till closing time.
Scotties in St Anton (one of three in the alps, the other two are in Tignes and La Plagne) as well as serving probably the best pizza in the resort also doubles up as a lively bar from about 9 or 10 o'clock onwards. Slightly further down the road is the Funky Chicken bar where, again, table dancing is an absolute must.
Later in the night there are two main night clubs in St Anton. In my opinion, the better of the two is probably Kandahar. Situated in an underground basement/cave in the middle of town it is open till 4 in the morning and drinks prices are fairly reasonable. The alternative to this is the Ibiza imitation, Picadilly's, which hosts both a bar and nightclub and is definitely worth a visit.
