Complete Skier - The Arlberg ski area

The Arlberg ski area

The Arlberg area lift pass covers a number of different ski areas over a wide region. St Anton is perhaps the most famous town covered on the lift pass, and the one with the largest self contained ski area. This does not mean, however, that the other areas on the lift pass are not well worth a visit.

St Christoph is generally considered to form part of the same ski area as St Anton. From the main Galzig lift in town you can ski all the way down blue run number 8 into St Christoph town centre. Perhaps the most noteworthy thing in St Christoph is the famous Hospital restaurant. The restaurant is adorned with pictures of a range of celebrities that have visited over the years. But perhaps its main attraction is the slide that runs down from the restaurant itself to the toilet.

About a 30-minute bus ride away from St Anton, are the connecting ski areas of Lech and Zurs. Alternatively, if you want to ski the majority of the way there you can ski to nearby Stuben and take the free ski bus, which stops in both Lech and Zurs, and runs every ten minutes. Both the skiing and the atmosphere of the resort differ significantly in Lech compared to St Anton. The pistes in Lech tend to be much wider and better bashed than in St Anton. This makes for what can best be described as ‘motorway skiing’, as you can get some considerable pace on the runs down, without really having to worry about other people around you. The town itself has a very different vibe from St Anton. It is noticeably more expensive. There is a Mercedes garage, that takes pride of place in the middle of town and it is difficult to find a beer anywhere in town for less than €5. It is also significantly smaller

From Lech you can ski to Zurs by taking the Rufikopfbahn cable car up and skiing down run 38 all the way into the town centre. This is a very peculiar run, which twists up and down before running into the town. Around Zurs, much of the off-piste tends to remain untracked for longer than anywhere else in the surrounding area, and so for fans of powder skiing it is well worth a visit.

From St Anton, you can ski very easily to Stuben. This is great if you want to avoid the crowds that tend to develop on many of the pistes in and around St Anton. Although it does not have the biggest ski area, skiing in Stuben is very enjoyable, not only for the more relaxed atmosphere surrounding it but also for the longer runs that tend to run in and out of town. Lastly, Sonnekopf, slightly further afield (about an hour’s bus ride away), is famous for its powder potential and magnificent variety of off-piste skiing.

If given the chance, there is a huge range of resorts to cover on the Arlberg lift pass. Even though it may not be possible to cover them all in a week’s holiday, it is definitely worth exploring as much as possible.
