One of the resorts, along with Chamonix in France, which shares Mont Blanc, Courmayeur is a resort for those who enjoy the challenge of skiing down steep runs and from great heights.
Courmayuer's two most famous pistes are the World Cup Downhill and the International Run; the latter is four miles long and goes through a 1000 metre drop. The Vallée Blanche run to Chamonix is another favourite.
Courmayeur itself achieves a good balance between authenticity and excitement: pedestrianisation and cobbled streets maintain its charm, but an active cafe and bar scene in the evening appeals to younger skiers.
